How accurate is IP geolocation?
Country results are often more useful than city results, but no IP database provides a verified home address.
How databases estimate location
Providers combine routing information, registry allocations, network observations, and corrections. Different data sources and update schedules cause databases to disagree.
Country versus city accuracy
A country estimate may be reliable for ordinary fixed connections, while a city can point to an ISP gateway, regional hub, or registration address. Results should be treated as estimates.
Why results can be wrong
VPN exits, proxies, corporate networks, satellite internet, mobile carriers, and recently transferred address ranges can place the apparent location far from the user.
Use results responsibly
Do not use IP geolocation as proof of identity, residence, presence, or wrongdoing. Avoid publishing or confronting someone based only on a lookup result.
