What can someone do with your IP address?
An IP address exposes less than many people assume, but it is still worth handling carefully.
What an IP can reveal
Public IP databases can usually estimate a country, region, city, and internet provider. City-level results are approximate and often identify the provider’s infrastructure rather than a home.
An IP address alone normally does not reveal a name, street address, passwords, or Discord messages.
Realistic risks
An exposed IP can be used for rough profiling, nuisance traffic, targeted phishing context, or denial-of-service attempts. Risk depends on network configuration and whether other personal data is already known.
How to respond
Restarting a router may obtain a new address from some providers. A reputable VPN can hide the home connection’s public IP from destinations. Keep router firmware updated, disable unnecessary port forwarding, and contact the provider if attacks persist.
