IP addresses explained
An IP address identifies a network interface for routing; it is not a verified identity or street address.
Public and private addresses
A public IP is the address internet services normally see for a connection. A private IP is used inside a home, school, or business network and is not routed directly across the public internet.
Network address translation often allows many devices to share one public IPv4 address.
IPv4 and IPv6
IPv4 uses familiar four-part addresses and has a limited address space. IPv6 uses a longer hexadecimal format and provides vastly more addresses. A connection may use either protocol or both.
Static, dynamic, and shared IPs
A static address is intended to remain stable. A dynamic address can change when a router reconnects or a provider renews a lease. Carrier-grade NAT can place many unrelated customers behind one public IPv4 address.
What an IP does not prove
An IP alone does not prove who used a connection at a particular time. Attribution can require accurate timestamps, provider records, and lawful process. Consumer geolocation is usually approximate.
